Amerika ägs och drivs av oligarker
June 8, 2008 on 5:44 am | In Nyheter | Inga kommentarer |
Our state, our nation, has been hijacked by oligarchs, corporations and a narrow, selfish political elite, a small and privileged group which governs on behalf of moneyed interests. We are undergoing, as John Ralston Saul wrote, “a coup d’etat in slow motion.” We are being impoverished — legally, economically, spiritually and politically. And unless we soon reverse this tide, unless we wrest the state away from corporate hands, we will be sucked into the dark and turbulent world of globalization where there are only masters and serfs, where the American dream will be no more than that — a dream, where those who work hard for a living can no longer earn a decent wage to sustain themselves or their families, whether in sweatshops in China or the decaying rust belt of Ohio, where democratic dissent is condemned as treason and ruthlessly silenced.

The mother and father of five daughters born and reared in Norway have been charged in what’s considered the first enforcement and test of the country’s new law against genital mutilation.
The couple is originally from Gambia but both partners are now Norwegian citizens. They have a total of six daughters, and five of the six have been subjected to genital mutilation, according to Hanne Kristin Rohde of the Oslo Police District.
Rohde told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) Friday that the parents were charged because they allegedly contributed to the genital mutilation of their daughters. The father is being held in police custody, while the mother is ill and pregnant with their seventh child and considered too weak to be held by police.

Rasism!1!1

Women in Ancient Greece were major power brokers in their own right, researchers have discovered, and often played key roles in running affairs of state. Until now it was thought they were treated little better than servants.
The discovery is part of an investigation by Manchester researchers into the founders of Mycenae, Europe’s first great city-state and capital of King Agamemnon’s domains.
‘It was thought that in those days women were rated as little more than chattels in Ancient Greece,’ said Professor Terry Brown, of the faculty of life sciences at Manchester University. ‘Our work now suggests that notion is wrong.’

Andrew Keen’s new book, The Cult of the Amateur is the latest addition to the Newsnight book club. In it, the author expresses his concern for the profligacy of online amateurism, spawned by the digital revolution. This, he feels, has had a destructive impact on our culture, economy and values.
He says, “[They] can use their networked computers to publish everything from uninformed political commentary, to unseemly home videos, to embarrassingly amateurish music, to unreadable poems, reviews, essays, and novels”.
He complains that blogs are “collectively corrupting and confusing popular opinion about everything from politics, to commerce, to arts and culture”.

Teenagers are increasingly snapping naked pictures of themselves on their cell phones, officials say, with the photos often falling into the wrong hands.
Sometimes the photos end up in everyone’s hands, via the Internet.
Brianna Moran, 15, who attends the same school as the girl in the La Crosse case, said she is not surprised by such behavior. “They probably think they’re hot or something. If you look at people’s MySpace, all the pictures are slutty,” she said.

Back in London, a Russian acquaintance who lived in Sweden for many years had offered me his explanation for the gap in school achievement between Finland and Sweden: Finland never did the 70s, he says, while the Swedes did it wholesale and are still stuck there. Swedish teachers can’t even take a child’s mobile phone away if he is using it during class, he fumes. Bertil Östberg, State Secretary to Jan Björklund, the education minister, laughs and agrees; apparently the great mobile-phone-in-class scandal was an issue in a previous election campaign. “We will give teachers the right to confiscate mobile phones,” he assures me.
I hear that the 1970s orthodoxy—that competition and grades destroyed a child’s motivation—means that Swedish children who are failing to learn can proceed right through compulsory school without anyone intervening or even noticing. If parents ask for a report, they can be given one—but it mustn’t include anything that looks like a grade. I offer the sort of fatuity I imagine such documents include: “Helen has contributed nicely to classroom discussion”. It is acknowledged as a classic of the genre. The new government, I am told, will make grades and reports not only legal, but compulsory.
Kenneth sheds an interesting light on the thorny comparison with Finland. You have to look, he says, at what sort of students each country’s system wants. Sweden aims to produce socially conscious generalists. The Finnish system, by contrast, drives rather narrowly at academic success.
June 5, 2008 on 12:57 pm | In Nyheter | Inga kommentarer |
Political appointees placed by the Bush administration into senior positions within Nasa’s media headquarters acted to play down and distort accounts given to the public of the research findings of its scientists on global warming, an official investigation has concluded.
The space agency’s internal watchdog, the inspector general, reports that from autumn 2004 until early 2006 Nasa’s central public affairs office handled global warming in a way that “reduced, marginalised, or mischaracterised climate change science made available to the general public”.
The confirmation of political interference is vindication for James Hansen, Nasa’s chief climate scientist and one of the first to sound the alarm over global warming. Claims of political dallying surfaced when Hansen said he had been blocked from taking part in a National Public Radio interview in December 2005

Brittiska studenter tappar i matematik
June 4, 2008 on 9:12 am | In Nyheter | Inga kommentarer |
It doesn’t add up. Live in Singapore and your child can sit a rigorous mathematics exam set by a British examination board. Send your child to a state school in this country and the same rigour will elude you. This is one small sign, one little fact among many, which shows that mathematics standards in this country are slipping.
The Reform think-tank has conducted an analysis of O-level and GCSE exams over time. They tell a story of a gradual decline in standards. In 1990 the percentage mark for a grade C was just over 50 per cent. Now scores of less than 20 per cent regularly suffice to gain the same grade, despite a much reduced level of difficulty. The paradox is that making maths easier at GCSE has coincided with a fall in the numbers going on to study it at A level. The drop has been of about 15 per cent in a decade.

My son is a wimp. I know this because of a new book by a woman named Hara Estroff Marano, which sounds like something you might serve at a vegan dinner party. In fact, Marano is the editor of Psychology Today, and her book is entitled - you guessed it - A Nation of Wimps: the High Cost of Invasive Parenting.
She has a point. The little chap with his undeveloped scissor skills will clearly never be able to handle the adult trauma of having to assemble Ikea furniture with a tequila hangover and a wrong-sized Allen key, for example. And Marano has more facts and figures to make her argument. Consider this: in 1968, 17.6 per cent of all American students achieved A grades; in 2004, it was 47.5 per cent. Now some might see this as evidence of the US population becoming wealthier and better educated. Not so, says Marano. It’s wimpishness, pure and simple.
